#912 Tampa Bay Rays -150

3-Units (6:10 P.M. CST)

One thing I have noticed about Andy Sonnastine is that Tampa Bay wins when he pitches. The Rays have won 8 of his last 10 starts, despite mediocre numbers from Sonnastine. He has pitched well over his last 3 games though , giving up 3 runs or less over 15 innings of work. He has also shown much improved control over his last 3 games, walking only 2 batters and allowing 0 home runs. Sonnastine will be opposed by Florida's Ryan Tucker. Tucker is making his second start of the season, after a successful debut against the Reds on Sunday. Tucker gave up 2 hits over 5 innings of work in a game that the Marlins won 9-2. The only negative in his debut was that he walked 5 batters. The Rays are coming off of a 3-6 road trip but have went 8-2 over their last 10 home games, while the Marlins have went 3-7 over their last 10 on the road. Tampa Bay is glad to be back home, and they have done nothing but win when Sonnastine has been on the mound.

Here's another situation of a pitcher that has struggled on the road, but has done very well at home. The Houston Astros are 4-1 in Brandon Backe's home starts this season. Backe has allowed 3 or less earned runs in 4 of his 5 home starts, while opponents are hitting .230 against him in his home games. Backe will be opposed by Manny Parra of the Brewers. Parra has given up 3 or more runs in 4 of his 5 road starts, while opponents are hitting .352 against him in his road starts. This could spell trouble, as the Astros are hitting .313 against lefties at home this season, while the Brewers are hitting .237 against righties on the road. Look for Backe to have another strong outing at home, and for the Astros offense to get the job done against Parra, who has struggled on the road.

Toronto's Jesse Litsch had been in good form until he ran into the hot bats of the New York Yankee's on Wednesday. He gave up a season high 10 hits and 4 earned runs over 5 innings of work, before being pulled. Even with Wednesday's bad showing he has still allowed only 4 earned runs over his last 3 games. Litsch will be opposed by Seattle's Jarrod Washburn. Washburn is in terrible form not only over his last few games, but for the entire season. He has given up 25 hits and 15 earned runs over his last 3 games, and opponents are hitting .322 against him for the season. Litsch has pitched well at home, and the Blue Jays have won 2 of his last 3 starts. Washburn on the other hand has struggled on the road. Opposing teams are hitting .344 against him in road games, and Seattle has lost 8 of his last 10 starts. The Mariners are hitting .236 and scoring 4.36 runs a game against righties over their last 5 games, while the Blue Jays are hitting .324 and scoring 5.88 runs a game against lefties over their last 5 games. Now that Vernon Wells is back in the lineup, those offensive numbers may even go higher!
